WHAT TO SEE
The Aran islands are one of the most fascinating places of Ireland and one of the preferred place by tourists. Usually, not having much time, they visit these islands (more the greater one) in a day, but I think that, having the chance, you can't absolutely miss to stop at least for a night for better being able to appreciate the visit of these
jewels.
The admirable monuments on the islands are the huge prehistoric Forts, most famous of which, the Dun Aengus, situated on the edge of a cliff a hundred meters high. Testimonies of these ancient civilizations are present in all the
island.
The Aran islands are also famous with the name Aran of the Saints because here are buried tens and tens of Irish Saints and in Christian age these lands had to be an important place for the presence of numerous monastic sites and places of pilgrimage. There are numerous rests of churches to testimony the importance of the Christianity in these desolate
lands.
But the more fascinating element of the Aran is surely the landscape: wild, entirely covered of stone and subdivided in many small lands surrounded by stone walls; silent and dark in the days of storm, warm on the beaches in sunny days of August, frightful and wonderful in the cliffs that face the Atlantic
Ocean.
This marvellous union of elements makes these islands a place you can't miss during a travel in Ireland. I have divided the places to see in four sections:
1)
Prehistoric Forts - 2) Churches
- 3) Clochan - 4)
