LIFE:

He spends his childhood near Cork, in the provincial Ireland. Since 1946 he studies history at Trinity College in Dublin. His first novel, A standard of Behaviour, is published in 1958. Six years later The Old Boys receives optimal critics and the Hawthornden Prize. Among his works The Children of Dynmouth, 1976, and Fools of Fortunes, 1983, both winners of the Whitbread Fiction Award, The Silence in the Garden, 1988, that gains the Yorkshire Post Book of the Year Award and Two Lives, 1991. Felicia' s Journey, 1994 wins the Whitbread Book of the Year and the Sunday Express Book of the Year. Some of his previous tales plus four more written for the occasion are collected in 1992 with the title Collected Stories. He has also written also many scripts for radio and television, some derived from stories already written.
