Traditional Music

Traditional music, with the dance, is deeply set in Irish culture and even young boys know and appreciate many songs and they are amused to dance them in pubs. Among the most famous bands who play Irish traditional music there are:

The Chieftains - Irish Heartbeat - (13Kb)

The Dubliners. The name derives obviously from the tales collection of James Joyce and they are an authentic legend in their native land but also obtaining a discreet success in foreign countries.

I Chieftains is perhaps still more famous than the Dubliners, specially in foreign countries, having also collaborated to numerous movie soundtracks among which Barry Lindon directed by Stanley Kubrick. Their most famous album is probably Irish Heartbeat with Van Morrison.

Planxty. Le loro sonorità acustiche e l'uso degli strumenti tradizionali li ha resi uno dei gruppi più famosi d'Irlanda. Vi consiglio un ascolto della raccolta Planxty Collection che contiene una selezione dei loro brani migliori.

Planxty. Their acoustic sound and the use of traditional instruments have made them one of the most famous band of Ireland. I suggest you to listen to the Planxty Collection that has a good selection of their best songs.

Among the others there are the "rebellious" Wolfe Tones, the Fureys, the talented flautist Sean Ryan (Siúil Uait, Cliaraí Ceoil) and the most famous Bodhran performer of Ireland, Tommy Hayes (An rás).

The Nightnoise (5Kb)

In the past years has got a footing a new genre where Irish Traditional Sounds and New Age's basis are mixed together. Among the main exponents I suggest you to listen to the Clannad, coming from the wild land of Donegal, Altan, De Dannan from Galway, Nightnoise (The parting Tide) and many others you can find as an example in numerous collections like Celtic Legacy published by Narada.
