| Formally the Irish Republic is bilingual: the most spoken language is English but in some areas still survive the old Irish native language. During your travel it could be very difficult to have language problems (unless you don't know English), but it won't be too much rare to hear some local speaking in a extremely strange language. Theoretically Irish is studied at school for approximately ten years, but they study most grammar, so it's very hard for many of them to have a conversation in Irish. But in the areas named Gaeltacht (on the West Coast, Galway Area, Aran Islands and Donegal) many people are totally bilingual and the eldest sometimes only speak Irish. Irish is a language of Celtic group and was introduced in Ireland by Celts in the last centuries before Christ. It obviously has transformed, modifying and updating itself in time, but still keeping an archaic construction that make it really hard to learn. It's quite similar to Scottish Gaelic and Gaelic of the Island of Mann and has aspects in common with Welshman and Breton. I have tried to report a short phrase-book that should let you to look well in a conversation with people from Gaeltacht. If you want to learn something more about this wonderful language, visit the Ursula's Homepage with brief lessons that should help you (in italian). |
