When I did the Inter-Rail in 1993 still did not exist the zones divisions and the ticket cost 550.000 L.
Unfortunately I begin to remember less and less of that travel and I regret not to have held a more detailed diary of what I visited.
I will try however to indicate the stops we did and the fundamental things I remember.
PARIS:
Hostel Maubuisson, 12 rue de Barres, old building right in the center. To eat go to the Latin Quarter; breakfast in a bar of the Marais; to visit: Beauburg, Notre Dame and the Ile de the Cité; Louvre and Musée d' Orsay (at least 1 entire day); Eiffel tower, Montmartre and Sacré Coeur; Belleville and the Villette (city of Science).
AMSTERDAM:
Tour (by bike) along the canals, Rijksmuseum (Rembrandt), Museum of Van Gogh and House of Anna Frank; Coffe shop " Bulldog ",
red-light
quarter.
COLONIA:
Dome, Wollraf-Richartz Museum, Museum Ludwig (POP Art); walk along the Reno.
COPENHAGEN:
Hostel Sleep In, For Henriks Lings Allé, 6, a sort of nomads-camp in a indoor-stadium; walk a lot, Nyhavn, Little Mermaid, Christiania.
STOCCOLMA:
Hostel Af Chapman, Skeppsholmen, Vessel by the end of XIX century with small 4-5 persons cabins. Reserve in advance!! If it's full, the one just in front of Af Champam is a good hostel rather cleaned up. To see: Kungliga Slottet (Royal Palace), Gamla Sta' n (old city), Museum " Vasa" (Vessel's wreck -well preserved- of the XVII century), Stadshuset (Town Hall), Fjällgaton (pitoresque road with houses in red wood), Skansen (park with reconstructions of old buildings).
At that time It was possible to rent small motorboats to do a tour of the canals, if you are 4-5 person it's really
worthy !
TURKU:
Hostel Kaupungin Retkeilymaja, Linnankatu
39, good standard.
Characteristic Finnish city, Turun Linna (Castle), Cathedral.
HELSINKI:
Senatintori (monumental Public square), Kansallismuseo (national Museum), Temppelioukio Kirkko (Modern church in the rock), Find the buildings created by Alvar Aalto; Russian Church; Suomenlinna (group of 6 isles nicknamed "Fortress of Finland").
NURMES:
We arrived here by chance, near the lakes area. The Hostel was much beautiful (small apartments with kitchen and bathroom) but I can't remember the name. Beautiful swimming pool complex with water in various temperatures and Sauna (Bomba).
ISOLE LOFOTEN:
Splendid wild islands inhabited by fishermen, North of the Arctic polar circle. There is a beautiful hostel in a school in Vågen.
OSLO:
Nasjionalgalleriet (Munch and other), Munch museet; Frognerparken (one of the most beautiful parks in Scandinavia), Vikingskipensa ("House of the Viking
ships").
All it was ended with a practically non-stop travel
Oslo-Genova.
The Inter-Rail is truly a fascinating experience but it can be really tiring, above all if you live it as true Inter-Rail Men.
I suggest you the reading of this booklet: "INTER RAIL MAN - manual for who travels by train"
by Luca Conti published by MILLELIRE - Stampa Alternativa. |

|
Two absolutely fundamental sites for every Inter-rail man are:
The GERMAN
RAILROADS site: you can find timetables of whichever European train, and print result; truly most
useful.
INTER-RAIL
NET: an optimal site in Italian about the Inter-rail: useful, travel diaries, suggestions etc etc.
