| We are no more used to watch around when we're walking, too busy with our rat-race. So sometimes we don't even notice the architectonic beauties that are around
us.
For example splendid testimonies of buildings in Art Noveau style can be observed inside the triangle formed by the roads Corso Venezia, Via Vivaio and Corso
Monforte.
Starting from Piazza San Babila take the corso and after few meters, at
n°7, you find a wonderful building with a floral rich decorated front gate in wrought iron. Little more ahead, at the opposite side of the road,
Casa Fontana-Silvestri doesn't have anything in common with Art Noveau, but a fascinating mix of Gothic patterns like pieces of a puzzle over a table.
Go on and take a glance at n°51 at the beautiful courtyard of Palazzo Bovara and at n°40 the long balcony of
Palazzo Rocca-Saporiti. Beautifulst example of Art Noveau architecture is
Casa Castiglioni, at n°47, rich of bronze branches and leaves (When it was constructed, at the beginning of the century, at both side of the entrance there were two maiden statues facing their buttocks to the public; this image aroused large scandal and gave to the palace the nickname of Ca' di Ciapp (House of buttocks). The two statues were removed and were later on placed on a side of Villa Romeo, now nursing home, in Via Buonarroti 48).
Turns in Via Vivaio and go to Corso Monforte, where there is The Province
Home, continuing then towards Palazzo Diotti (at n°31, Prefecture Home). At n°32, at corner with Via Conservatorio, there is a wonderful building by architect Campanini. But the authentic masterpiece of this architect is at n°11 of Via Bellini,
Casa Campanini, one of the beautifulst examples of Art Noveau buildings in Milano; stop yourselves to look carefully the richness and fascination of decorations and the extraordinary
balconies.
Coming back, the Church of S. Maria della Passione deserves a visit. It's the second largest church of Milano; of octagonal shape, behind the baroque facade is hidden a dark church, dominated by the immense cupola and full of remarkable paintings by Crespi and some interesting frescoes. Deserves a visit also the Sala Capitolare and the Museum that houses sacred furnishings and some paintings in some rooms of the ancient monastery.
Coming back in Corso Monforte I suggest a beautiful walk between the roads Barozzi
(Casa Morganti at n°2), Cappuccini (at n°8 Casa
Berri-Meregalli, bizarre and eccentric building, mixture of different styles, in whose entrance hall is a marble head by the sculptor A. Wildt. In front of Via Barozzi, behind a green gate, an authentic wonder is hidden. A garden completely isolated from the city traffic, populated by flamingos and peacocks. Listene to the sounds of this magical corner at morning in a festive day, when everything around is
hush), Mozart (at n°21 a beautiful fresco of women).
A short detour deserves also Casa Fidia in Via Melegari 2 and the Marble Ear - an entryphone in the old time - of
Casa Sola-Busca in Via Serbelloni 10. |
